Description
Saint-Georges d'Oléron is a land of marshes. Once salt marshes (salt was the great wealth of the commune, along with vineyards), they are now partly devoted to oyster farming, but many have been abandoned.
Several hectares, such as the Douhet marshes, have been purchased by the Conservatoire du Littoral, whose mission is to preserve them and make them accessible to the public.
Although a few cows can still be seen, they are mainly home to birds: gulls, seagulls, waders, grey herons, little egrets and shelducks, as well as a few birds of prey, including the marsh harrier.
Glasswort, sea lavender and reeds form an original flora for you to discover.
Seen from the air, the marshes of Oléron present geometric or abstract shapes and colors of great beauty.
They are at their most beautiful in spring or at sunset. Numerous footpaths and cycle paths are available for exploring the marshes.
