Description
The Saumonards forest stretches along the eastern coastline of the Ile d'Oléron, between the villages of Foulerot, Saint Georges d'Oléron and Boyardville.
This remarkable dune and woodland area covers almost 700 hectares.
It is the result of a large-scale reforestation campaign undertaken in the 19th century, the aim of which was to halt the advance of the dunes, which were gradually encroaching as far as the villages.
In an unspoilt environment, the forest is still home to the remains of an ancient fort and sandy military structures.
Composed mainly of maritime pines and holm oaks, the Saumonards forest offers a multitude of signposted foot, bike and horse trails, almost all of which lead down to the ocean and its beaches, from which you can catch a glimpse of the Ile d'Aix and Fort Boyard.
