Historic district of La Brée-les-Bains
Dates & opening times
Description
Quite small, the historic heart of La Brée-les-Bains is sheltered behind a small dune.
A few streets slope steeply down to the beach. And it is precisely this close relationship with the sea that is part of the seaside resort's charm.
Pierre Loti spent holidays there. He speaks of it in "The Story of a Child":
"We had gone to stay in a fishing village completely unknown and lost at that time...a village with low houses, as whitewashed as the kasbahs of Algeria and surrounded by certain species of flowers that can withstand the sea wind...".
At the time, beautiful houses flourished, occupied in the summer months by the bourgeoisie and surrounded by land tended by farmers.
