Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul à Brouage

Description

Characterized by the military sobriety of the period, it comprises three naves separated by cylindrical pillars. While the two side aisles can still be seen, the central one is covered by a wooden vault in the shape of an upturned ship's hull. It is assumed that it was originally built by shipwrights.



The floor is covered with tombstones under which lie rich 17th-century salt merchants, soldiers and former governors.



Dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, two statues representing them stand on either side of the altar.



There are also nine stained-glass windows donated since the 1980s by Canadian cities, provinces or families in memory of Samuel Champlain, the founder of Quebec City and a native of Brouage.



The Comité du Mémorial de la Nouvelle-France presents an exhibition on the beginnings of the discovery and evangelization of the New World.
