European Heritage Days 2026 - Tour of the German Battery at the St. Séverin Pass
Dates & opening times
Description
Consisting, in particular, of four 155-mm guns supplemented by numerous bunkers, including an extremely rare observation and artillery-fire-control bunker, this battery is representative of the defensive system established starting in 1942 along the entire coastline from the North Sea to southern Europe, which would come to be known as the Atlantic Wall.
Who decided to build these structures? In what context were they designed? Who built them? Who financed them? Were they ever used? What happened when the island was liberated? And finally, what should we do today with these bunkers that dot our beaches? These are just a few of the questions that come to mind when looking at these fortifications.
To understand the context of these structures and consider their future, Philippe Lafon will lead a tour of this battery to provide deeper insight into the history of these island military fortifications, which remain largely unknown.
This exceptional tour will take place during Heritage Days weekend on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Reservations can be made at the tourist offices on the Île d’Oléron. Space is limited. Free parking and admission.
