Atelier D&C Marquetry
Dates & opening times
Description
Straw marquetry is an astonishing skill that transforms a simple material - rye straw - into a precious covering. Originating in the Far East, straw marquetry arrived in Europe in the XVIIᵉ century. After being neglected, this art form enjoyed a renaissance in the 1920s thanks to decorator André Groult, a major figure in Art Deco. ? A great deal of patience and meticulousness Everything is done entirely by hand: each straw strand is split, flattened with a folder to reveal its natural brilliance, then glued edge-to-edge to create unique patterns and changing reflections. And thanks to the silica naturally present in straw, the material is waterproof and doesn't even need varnish. In their workshop-boutique in the heart of the citadel of Brouage, you'll find jewelry, paintings and various decorative objects, as well as made-to-measure creations: furniture renovation, personalized wall decorations. Their aim is to offer unique, high-quality products, while preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship.
