Description

In the 2nd half of the 17th century, huge wind-blown sand dunes covered the old village of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains and its church. Rebuilt on its present site, the new village was again threatened

threatened in the early 19th century by an enormous dune that was about to absorb it. The public authorities then decided to stop the phenomenon, which was also occurring on the moors and on the Arvert peninsula. From

1819, seedlings and palisades were planted parallel to the coast to fix the sand. 30 years later, a pine forest was established.

Some 8 km long, it stretches over three communes and covers some 2,000 ha, making it the most extensive of all the island forests on the French Atlantic coast. Home to a specific ecosystem, it is protected by current regulations:

Inscription part of the Natura 2000 network,

Statut classified natural area,

Forêt domaniale.
