Conférence UTLMO : Les enjeux politiques de l'eau en Afrique subsaharienne
Dates & opening times
Description
Catastrophic droughts and floods linked to climate change are severely affecting the populations of sub-Saharan Africa. Water management is therefore a major geopolitical issue.
Water resources in this part of the continent are either unmanaged or poorly managed: river flows are rarely regulated, well-based irrigation is relatively underdeveloped, and the practice of cloud seeding lacks a clear legal framework.
Furthermore, since the Dublin Declaration (1992), freshwater is no longer considered a common good but rather a commodity to be purchased, which exacerbates poverty in countries where the standard of living is already very low.
This presentation will address all these issues based on field research conducted in countries the speaker regularly visits (Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, and Djibouti).
