Description

At the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany, found itself on the losing side. When the Western powers dismantled the Ottoman Empire and divided up its main territories among themselves, Greece inherited the western coast along the Aegean Sea, commonly known as Asia Minor. In 1922, Mustafa Kemal undertook the reconquest of his country and drove out 1,500,000 Greeks under tragic circumstances. Part of Allain Glykos’s family was massacred. It is this tragedy that the Greeks still refer to today as the Great Catastrophe of Asia Minor.
