Description

Following the fire on April 15, 2019, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris lost its roof trusses and roofing, its spire, and part of its high vaults. Aside from these incalculable losses, the cathedral itself withstood the fire and its treasures remained intact. The very next day, the President of the Republic ordered that its reconstruction be completed within five years—all without anyone knowing the building’s actual condition… And yet the challenge was met and successfully carried out. The cathedral did indeed reopen its doors on December 8, 2024, a little over five years after the disaster. However, the process was not so straightforward.

The monument’s heritage value demanded studies and construction work of the very highest quality, despite this improbable timeline. But above all, the context was far from simple: a presidential project and political pressures, international media coverage, analyses, commentary, conspiracy theories, and a police investigation; the scientific community lying in wait; various associations that were not always well-meaning or acting in good faith; a feud between the “Modernists” and the “Traditionalists,” multiple appearances before the Ministry of Culture’s National Commission for Architecture and Heritage, development plans by the Catholic clergy assigned to the site, lead dust pollution, regulations, public procurement and heritage codes, engineering firms, inspection agencies, and insurance companies… and more than thirty separate construction projects rolled into one!

But donations poured in… With all of this and a few other little things we’ll tell you about, the project was carried out with rigor, organization, passion, and pride. And Notre-Dame is here once again, more beautiful than ever.
