Circuit Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, du quartier historique aux villas balnéaires
Dates & opening times
Description
At the southern tip of the island, Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, a seaside resort since 1898, listed in 1983, has retained its charm of yesteryear, with its seafront, its beautiful 20th-century villas, its typical oyster port with painters and art galleries, grouped together under the name "Village d'inspiration des Peintres", its pine forest and its fine sandy beaches. During the Belle Epoque, Saint-Trojan adopted the fashion for sea bathing. It became the main seaside resort on the island of Oleron. The therapeutic and recreational aspects of the ocean combined to accentuate its appeal, and the Saint Trojan seafront saw the emergence of chalets and cottages, typical seaside architecture where freedom is expressed through the marriage of brick and stone, with colorful ceramics instilling a spirit of gaiety. Saint-Trojan-les-Bains is also a natural setting where flora and fauna are well represented. The Marais des Bris, a 37-hectare sensitive natural area, is a fine example, where canals, reeds, meadows and bushes intermingle. From the old village to the seaside villas, this pleasant stroll takes you on a discovery of Saint-Trojan's history, punctuated by the whims of the ocean and the dune. Option Long circuit: 9 km (following the Pacaud dike, to discover the Marais des Bris).
