Porte des pêcheurs
Situated along the ramparts of the Citadelle, the Porte des Pêcheurs offers a panorama well worth a visit: a view from the heights over the Moëze-Oléron reserve and access to a vast inclined plane and a discreet little beach.

Description
The Porte des Pêcheurs (Fishermen's Gate), dating from 1713, was vital to the development of oyster farming, facilitating the passage of fishermen on foot.
At the foot of the ramp, a small cement basin was used to wash boots as fishermen arrived on foot.
A glacis extended from the Porte des Pêcheurs to the Porte Royale. Designed by Vauban, this vast sloping area of land was intended to provide visibility.
To create this glacis, in 1689 an entire district of Château d'Oléron was demolished: the Church of Sainte Marie, the Cordeliers convent and many of the town's residences.
