Description

Alongside the most prestigious courts of Venice, Florence, and Rome, peripheral courts began to emerge in the north of the peninsula during the 15th century, which in turn exerted their own influence.

These princely courts were inextricably linked to the great families—the Medici of Florence, the Visconti and the Sforza of Milan, the Este of Ferrara, the Gonzaga of Mantua, and the Montefeltro of Urbino.

They served as the showcase of the state, the place where marital alliances were forged, and where the prince acted as both a patron of the arts and a condottiere. Rivalry flourished there, encouraging the creation of schools of painting, music, and literature. The prince’s magnificence was measured by his ability to attract the most renowned painters and writers.
