Synopsis

“Douze” was inspired by the femicide of Alexia Silva Costa in 2016 on the island of Oléron. Not by a news story, but by a hole: the one where the body of a fifteen-year-old girl was buried. One of her classmates knocked her unconscious, strangled her, and then stabbed her twenty-seven times—twelve of those stabs after she was already dead—because she had said no. The play, however, is not the story of this brutal murder, but rather that of a silenced voice, which resounds from the limbo where unspoken words wander, and calls to be brought to life through staging, music, and the body: an attempt to restore to language what violence has stolen.

*Twelve*, narrated by A., is at times a cry of rebellion, at times a hymn to life. A single line of dialogue unfolding across as many songs that questions the legal and social responses to femicide.

The text is a recipient of ARTCENA’s creation grant and also the winner of the 2024 Jean Guerrin Fellowship, initiated by the City of Montreuil.
