Riding the wave
Ile d'Oléron, for surf lovers
Between the sandy and rocky beaches, the waves are very different. What's more, with the interplay of tides, wind and swell, conditions can change very quickly, allowing everyone to enjoy themselves to the full. When the spots are saturated or the wind is full onshore, the retreat spots are ideal for shelter. All year round, surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers practice their passion on Oléron. Don't expect us to tell you where the best spots are. As everywhere else, talking to local riders is the best way. If you want to learn or improve your skills, the schools are waiting for you. Once you've got the hang of it, you don't have to carry all your own equipment. Schools and surf shops are on hand to answer all your questions.

Stand-up paddling is an interesting alternative to the pleasures of surfing and discovering the island, and a sport in its own right. It combines surfing, racing and walking on the sea or in the heart of the marshes. Once you've acquired the "take off" and the paddle in hand, you'll have a different view of the island, and the chance to take an unusual tour of the fauna, flora and heritage, guided by qualified instructors.
On the water, canoeing and kayaking, rather physical at sea, is a much more relaxing and bucolic activity through the many marshes and channels of Marennes-Oléron. Water rambles will reveal the island of Oleron in a whole new light.

The long sandy beaches of the south of the island are ideal for sand yachting. Their low relief and the very regular presence of wind, with winter lows and summer thermal breezes, make them ideal locations. The wind is also ideal for sailing sports such as optimist, catamaran or windsurfing... These sports are within everyone's reach. Training courses, rentals or private lessons provided by local schools will open the door to wind-powered gliding.
Many ways to have fun in the water
Jet skis, with or without a license, are available for hire or for supervised outings, and can take you as far as Fort Boyard, Ile d'Aix or Fouras... Towed buoys are just as much fun, offering thrills and laughs.
Discovering the riches of the seabed is also a must on Oléron. Rocks, drop-offs, arches and caves follow one another to dazzle scuba diving enthusiasts. Divers will be able to rub shoulders with the local underwater fauna and discover wrecks dating back to the world wars. Get in touch with one of our diving schools, who will be happy to guide you in learning and perfecting your hobby.
None of this would be possible without good swimming practice. That's why swimming schools will give you all the advice, tips and tricks you need to gain confidence and be like a fish in water. In short, in top-quality bathing waters, remember that the island of Oleron boasts several blue flags and that many professionals have joined forces around the Responsible Nautism network to raise your awareness of biodiversity. On clean beaches, in a preserved environment, you'll be able to enjoy the infinite pleasures of water sports in all their forms.
