The Maritime Flavors Route: A Seaside Road Trip in Marennes-Oléron
This weekend, we’re heading out to the countryside in Marennes-Oléron for a gourmet road trip. With the wind in your hair and a great spot in your rearview mirror, you’re all set for your vacation. We’ve selected 7 must-visit spots along the Route des Saveurs Maritimes for a weekend of exploring that’s all about the ocean.

Stop 1: Tour of the Cocollos Oyster Farm
First stop: Bourcefranc-Le Chapus, just before the viaduct that leads to the island of Oléron. There, discover a somewhat unconventional oyster farm. Halfway between Marennes-Oléron and Ireland, Jacques and Yvonne Cocollos offer oysters sourced from these two great maritime regions! Stroll among the oyster beds and follow the various stages of the aging process developed by this family-run business. All that’s left is to head to the Cocollos hut to finally enjoy a delicious plate of these seafood delicacies from across the Channel.

Step 2: A drive along the Oyster Route and its shacks
Let’s hit the road, Simone! We’re driving with the windows down toward the famous Oyster Trail. Let’s set off on a drive along the unspoiled and wild west coast of Île d’Oléron, a historic route for oyster farming in the region. One of our favorite spots to stroll and take in a deep breath of Oléron’s fresh air. Stop by the Port de La Baudissière and stroll past its pretty, colorful oyster huts. Today, local artisans have breathed new life into them and display their “Made in Oléron” creations there.

Stop 3: Visit the Fort Royer site
We continue due north toward the La Perrotine channel, to the Fort Royer site. Let yourself be charmed by the authenticity of this small, traditional oyster-farming village, right in the heart of the Moëze-Oléron Nature Reserve! Run by passionate volunteers, you’ll be fully immersed in the world of oyster farming. Stroll among the oyster beds, learn to recognize the environment that shapes Marennes-Oléron oysters… You’ll discover all their secrets!
Stop 4: Tour of the Port of La Cotinière and its fish market
As the largest port in Charente-Maritime, the port of La Cotinière is THE capital of seafood in Marennes-Oléron. Twice a day, the harbor comes alive and the fishmongers’ stalls fill with nearly 90 species of fish, depending on the season! Once your basket is full, head down to the harbor for a coffee with friends and soak up the infectious energy of the fishermen and vendors who bring this charming fishing port to life. Don’t miss the guided tour of the area for an authentic and intimate experience.

Step 5: Share an “éclade” with friends
Before wrapping up your journey, don’t miss the traditional éclades at the charming Bord à Bord hut near Boyardville! Perfect for those long summer evenings, this classic Oléron dish is best shared with friends or family. How does it work? Carefully arranged in neat circles, the mussels are then covered with a thick layer of pine needles that are set alight, giving them an incomparable flavor. All that’s left to do is settle in, enjoy the peaceful setting, and put the world to rights with a drink in hand!
