Port de plaisance du Douhet

Between sea and marsh, Port du Douhet, a former small commercial port located to the east of the commune of Saint-Georges d'Oléron, is now a popular yachting harbor. It's well worth the detour!

Descriptif

A monumental project in the 1840s, the port and the Douhet channel were built to link Saint-Georges d'Oléron to the ocean and facilitate trade in salt and wine, which until then had passed through the more remote Perrotine.

A stroll along the quays at the height of the bridge reveals the scale of the construction work carried out in the 19th century.

Condemned by sand and silt, the channel is no longer practicable today. However, it continues to supply seawater to a vast network of saltworks.

From the port, a 2km stroll along the old towpath alongside the channel takes you to the historic center of Saint-Georges d'Oléron.
