Description

Since 2020, the African continent has witnessed 9 coups d'état, which have brought military juntas to power in place of presidents considered democratically elected. These "breakdowns of the constitutional order" reflect both popular discontent and a crisis of democracy that needs to be addressed.

Since François Mitterrand's La Baule speech in 1990, African countries have complied with the democratic injunction formulated by Western countries. But the graft has not always taken, and has sometimes led to misuse or even rejection.

This conference will analyze the evolution of modes of governance in Africa between the pre-colonial period and independence. It will offer some answers to the question of why most of the continent's countries find it difficult to apply a model brought in from outside.

By retreating into the "global South", Africa is increasingly opposed to the West, and tempted by so-called "illiberal" regimes. It's true that only 8% of the planet's inhabitants live in what is considered a perfect democracy.
