UTLMO Conference: Japonism
Dates & opening times
Description
René Ventola will explain the influence of Japan in painting, decorative arts, literature, music and even fashion at the end of the 19th century.
When, in the 1860s, Japan entered into diplomatic relations with a number of Western countries, a large number of objets d'art were offered in specialized stores in several major European cities, particularly Paris. This immediately gave rise to an incredible craze that came to be known as "Japonisme" among cultivated connoisseurs such as Gauguin and Van Gogh. Porcelain, lacquerware, prints and silk kimonos were soon on display at the Universal Exhibitions.
