Serge Zaka conference - What future for agriculture on Oléron?
Dates & opening times
Description
Climate change: a major challenge for Oleron's agriculture The island of Oleron, like the rest of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, is already suffering the effects of climate change. Prolonged droughts, heat waves, excessively mild winters and late frosts are disrupting agricultural cycles and threatening crop productivity. But what are the concrete impacts on soils, harvests and local ecosystems? Serge Zaka, PhD in agroclimatology, will draw on scientific data and field examples to decipher these phenomena. Topics include: - Lack of winter cold: essential for certain crops (arboriculture, viticulture), sub-zero temperatures are becoming increasingly rare. This scarcity undermines plant dormancy. - False springs: early spring temperatures followed by late frosts, as in 2021, destroy buds and reduce yields. - Extreme thermal stress: heat waves and droughts exhaust soils and weaken crops. These upheavals are already reshaping production zones and raising a crucial question: how far can agriculture adapt?
