Description
In 1992, after a hiatus of nearly thirty years, the Société des Régates de St-Trojan was revived and once again began organizing the Traditional Grand Parade of Historic Sailing Ships every summer. This annual event is a highlight of the seaside town’s summer season. Many spectators take this opportunity to discover the charm and elegance of the region’s working vessels as they watch their multicolored sails unfurl from the Petite-Plage. On this occasion, Petite-Plage recaptures its “Belle Époque” atmosphere with beach games, swimmers, and strollers dressed in “1900s” attire. Numerous volunteers and members of associations from Charente-Maritime and Charente, passionate about heritage and period costumes, transport Petite-Plage back more than a century, to the sound of popular tunes from 1900 performed by the Philharmonie Oléronaise de Saint-Pierre. Stéphanie Roumégous gives us a detailed account of the major and minor events in the history of Saint-Trojan and the island of Oléron before the “Great War,” as we wait for the boats to arrive with the tide around 3:30 p.m.
