UTLMO Lecture: Charlie Parker and the Bebop
Dates & opening times
Description
Charles Christopher Parker, aka Charlie, also known as "Bird", took up the saxophone at the age of 11. He soon became a musician of genius, virtuoso and, some would say, visionary. He became one of the greatest soloists and improvisers in jazz history, a pioneer of Bebop with his wild solos. Parker, profound, unpredictable, suicidal, had a reign that was, in a sense, short-lived, but left such a deep imprint that, even today, many young musicians around the world claim his legacy.
Bebop, or Bop, with its fast tempo, derived from swing and boogie, is the origin of rock and the starting point of modern jazz.
Jacques Ravenel, himself a renowned saxophonist, teacher and lecturer, will retrace Charlie Parker's artistic career, his work, his history and, of course, Bebop, a major musical trend in jazz, easy to imagine as "a revolution that came out of nowhere", whereas some believe it was born of "the desire of blacks to take jazz back from the hands of whites".
