Marennes-Oléron, between sea and marshland, is ideal for canoeing, being one of the best ways to feel at one with a rich, protected nature.

In the channels and marshes, you will doubtless be surprised by the hushed atmosphere, a real enchantment. Around Boyardville, La Brée les Bains, Château-d'Oléron and Grand-Village-Plage these watery lanes traced across the land may enable you to stumble across an animal or a bird or just to enjoy the typical flora.

Whether as a family, a couple or with friends, canoeing is ideal for observing egrets, grey herons, stilts and amongst others, wild ducks. Along the banks of the channels you’ll see salicornia, little green beans of the marshes or little blue flowers – “the immortals of the marshes”. From one hour to the next and depending on the light, these trips can be very varied, especially first thing in the morning when the rays from the sun are just caressing the water…

Guided visits and canoe or kayak hire are on offer throughout the island and the Marennes basin. These are very stable craft and accessible for all.

The east coast of the island, the most protected, is particularly suited for sea-kayaking. In summer around Boyardville and La Brée les Bains and by Marennes-plage there are generally very light currents and no waves which makes this activity even more attractive. Kayak-surfing, for the more sporty, takes place on the Atlantic coast where you’ll find rollers… Terrific sensations!
