Whether you are a beginner or a confirmed surfer looking for adrenaline, Oléron Island has got something for you. From one spot to the next, tremendously varying wind and tide conditions offer something to satisfy all water sports fans.
For surf and bodyboarding, head to Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, Grand-Village-Plage, Vert-Bois or Les Huttes.
You will find a good range of quality waves and sand reefs.
Advanced surfers should try la pointe de Chassiron, a reliable rocky spot with frequent waves.
If the sea is rough, don't despair as there is a sheltered spot in Saint-Denis-d'Oléron at la pointe des Boulassiers.
This well known spot is exceptional. Surfers arrive from all horizons at les Boulassiers as it is one of the very few surfable spots in France on stormy days.
The island is also a first class destination for windsurfers as pointed out by Didier Lafitte, chairman of NEMO (Nautisme en Marennes-Oléron) " On the Atlantic coast, not many places are great for both surf and windsurf, but Oléron is!"
The famous La plage des Huttes regularly hosts national and international competitions and it is also suitable for beginners. With the wind changing direction and strength often, not to mention the tide's movements, this beach is an exciting playground.
Here as on many other locations you will find surf and windsurf schools. Tuition is available for kids and for adults in a safe environment. The only risk is to become rapidly hooked on these fab sports!!
And there is more to discover.. with kite-surf developing on the island for your pleasure!
